Im pretty sure I get that "you're committing crimes against children" look every time I tell him I'm teaching Direct Instruction. (Although for the hundreth time, I'm REQUIRED to do so)

No, no, Kelly, this has nothing to do with you! Usually I get this feeling when I am talking to people who think that it is easy to teach and that black kids are just "deficient"...
